Codes and Conventions: Magazine Covers

liaavidan

Codes and conventions are essential for understanding the meaning of media types and how they appeal to audiences. This week, my classmates and I analyzed the codes and conventions of two magazine covers that corresponded to our final magazine genre. I chose the BBC Good Food magazine and the Sarie Food magazine, which both fit under the Cooking, Food, and Beverage genre.

The Graphic Elements and Codes and Conventions of the BBC Good Food Magazine:

This BBC Good Food magazine conveys specific meanings with the types of content it provides, the colors, the typography, and more. For example, the selling line establishes credibility, which may persuade people to purchase the magazine. Regarding the color scheme, pink and yellow are colors in the magazine; not only do these colors complement the central image, but they indicate summer and the sweetness of desserts (the theme of this magazine). There is also a specific typography that the BBC Good Food magazine uses, developing continuity and uniqueness.

The Graphic Elements and Codes and Conventions of the Sarie Food Magazine:

The Sarie Food magazine also uses graphic elements and codes and conventions that differentiate itself from other magazines. An example is the color palette, which enhances the magazine's appearance. Buzz words are specific language choices that attract an audience's attention and persuade the audience. Since not many magazines have a logo, this magazine stands out.
