Second Genre Photoshoot

This Media Studies assignment entailed choosing a magazine genre different from the first genre photoshoot, which we would focus on in our second photoshoot; I chose the “Science and Nature” magazine genre. My main goals for this photoshoot were to utilize natural light (which I had trouble with in my last photoshoot), take clear shots, and photograph various types of wildlife.

More specifically, I focused on photographing different areas of my neighborhood to capture varying forms of nature. It is worth noting that I took pictures of fish in the marina near where I live; the purpose of photographing both land and aquatic organisms was to ensure the diversity of my photos.

I took the following nature photos at noon at the peak of daylight, when the sun was directly over the areas I focused on photographing. Photographing midday was successful regarding the depth and contrast of the images, likewise to taking high-quality photos. Taking spare photos was another success since I had more options when deciding what to submit and eliminate.

I was initially skeptical of photographing animals since I needed precision, preparation, and swiftness to capture the shot. It was necessary to maintain good quality simultaneously as they would often abruptly flee when sensed by my presence, leaving me with a fuzzy, indistinguishable animal. Despite my concerns and struggles, I successfully took shots of squirrels, a fly, and a lizard. As for my weaknesses, taking photos of fish in the marina was challenging due to the water being slightly murky/having a yellowish tint. Thus, the fish didn’t appear very prominent.

Regarding class critique and feedback, my peers specified that the picture on the left was appealing—it appeared bright and vibrant. On the flip side, they commented that taking the photo in portrait mode would have had a superior outcome; utilizing this feature would blur out the background and focus more on the flower. Moving forward, I can consider using this mode as needed to enhance the quality of my photos.
