This week, our class learned about the genres that categorize magazines. From there, we researched our top four of the eight genres, found a magazine that fit each category, and explained why we chose those genres and examples. This process is significant for having sufficient background information before choosing a magazine genre that interests us the most. All of the magazine images in this post are from Google.
Sports and Recreation
I chose the Sports and Recreation magazine genre for one of many reasons. For one thing, I’m deeply interested in sports, and I immerse myself in them regularly. More specifically, I’m a competitive rhythmic gymnast enduring constant training; I train six days a week, four hours a day, with a two-time Bronze Olympic medalist (Anna Bessonova). Not to mention, I love snowboarding with my family during the winter months.
Of the thousands of magazines that flood this world, I chose this particular dance magazine since it interested me, but most importantly, because of the distinct details that set itself above the rest. The clouds/smoke and the dark background complement the floating dancers and their costumes. Likewise, the color scheme gives off a certain feel to the audience, the fonts work well together, and the light shining at the top adds to the overall look.
Science and Nature
The Science and Nature genre interested me as I love traveling and documenting my trips. Therefore, I wanted to consider it a magazine possibility; it would encourage me to visit places I may not otherwise have wanted to sightsee. It would also influence me to pay more attention and observe the Earth’s natural wonders in closer detail.
I picked this Science and Nature magazine as the cover immediately conveyed its overall message. Only looking at the visuals, I realized that the magazine would address something along the lines of clams and algae; the ocean background and fish directly communicated this idea. I also appreciate the magazine’s format, as the text isn't distracting.
Cooking, Food, and Beverage
The Cooking, Food, and Beverage genre interested me as it is a hobby of mine. In other words, I have experience with cooking/baking and love to photograph my work. Therefore, I chose this genre to expand my knowledge of photographing food. Not only that, but I’ve always enjoyed cooking, especially with my mother—whether it be making dinner, a dessert, or a holiday meal for my family.
This magazine caught my eye due to its distinctive features. More specifically, the different fonts and colors portrayed a particular feel to the magazine; it appears summery and joyful, inclining the audience to continue reading. The colors also enhanced the photograph and made certain aspects of the magazine pop. Consequently, I chose this magazine as it gave me insight into captivating an audience through its cover page.
Fashion and Style
This genre caught my attention as I found researching magazines that capture current fashion trends fascinating. In other words, it was interesting to glimpse various fashion trends and how they evolved with time. I was also curious to see the prevalence of celebrity endorsement in this genre.
I selected this Fashion and Style magazine as it made me aware of how simple elements can bring a magazine to the next level. In this case, the flower background, flower print dress, and bird indicate the magazine's theme (spring-based fashion). The simplicity and reduced text allow the audience to focus solely on the visuals.
In researching four magazine genres, I learned how magazines in each genre look, the details that make them unique, and the features that attract their audience. The magazine from the Science and Nature genre looks more formal with limited text, while the Cooking, Food, and Beverage magazine is vibrant with text that fills the page. Meanwhile, the dance-themed magazine shows light shining at the top right corner to resemble a spotlight on a stage, and the fashion magazine looks modern and simplistic.
