This week, my classmates and I selected a magazine genre from our previous two photoshoots. We then had to explain our reasoning for choosing this genre and analyze our plans for our final magazine.
Overall, I had a pleasant and enlightening experience with my first two photoshoots—namely, the Cooking, Food, and Beverage and the Science and Nature magazine genre (as pictured below). In particular, these photoshoots allowed me to dive deeper into each genre, gain knowledge via real-world experiences, and perfect my photography flaws. I was able to become more proficient in the area subsequently.
In the photo to the left, I perfected my flaws using a photography light box to address my past issues with lighting. Considering I had limited access to natural lighting (I took most of my photos in the late afternoon), I utilized this tool to combat this difficulty. In reference to the picture on the right, I gained a greater understanding of photographing living things from a first-hand perspective, allowing me to work around the setbacks I had at that moment.
In light of this, I decided to designate my final magazine to the Cooking, Food, and Beverage genre. More specifically, I was more satisfied with the outcome of that photoshoot, and I am more experienced in photographing such subjects—since I often photograph what my family cooks and bakes. I also have more in mind for future photoshoots in this genre: I aim to improve background lighting, capture eye-catching shots, and explore the rule of thirds. It is worth noting that I will solely photograph homemade baked goods since it will make my magazine unique. In other words, I can control the presentation and outcome of my baked goods due to them being homemade, allowing me to add distinctive looks and originality. Regarding social groups, I intend to target home cooks and individuals with culturally diverse backgrounds. Most, if not all, of my photographed desserts are multi-stepped and elaborate. Therefore, families that desire gourmet baked goods would be another target audience of mine. As for targeting issues, affordability considerably influences my audience due to some families not having the resources or expenses required in the recipe—such as a torch in the picture to the left. Not only that, but I am more enthusiastic about taking shots for the Cooking, Food, and Beverage magazine genre since it interests me more. I am also more capable of expressing my creativity in this genre since I can utilize the burst feature on my iPhone, experiment with plating techniques, and more.
